ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
In Burkina Faso, WFP provides emergency food assistance to millions of people exposed to hunger across the country including internally displaced persons, school children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers.
WFP also works with various partners to strengthen the resilience of communities to climate shocks and stresses through the construction and rehabilitation of assets such as water towers, community farms and pastures, allowing families to grow and harvest more food for themselves. Since January 2023, WFP in collaboration with the Government of Burkina Faso, has been increasing its operational capacity to deliver vital food assistance using three heavy lift helicopters to 14 hard-to-reach locations due to insecurity.
JOB PURPOSE
The Strategic Communications Officer will support the Burkina Faso Country Office in defining and implementing effective external communications plans, working closely with the country director to ensure communication activities support the Country Office objectives.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Partnerships, the overall guidance of the Country Director and in close consultation with the Regional Communications Advisor, the Strategic Communication Officer will undertake the following activities:
Create, edit and revise various communication products, including speeches, factsheets, Annual Country Reports, talking points, Media Messages, opinions, preface, foreword, web-articles and social media texts in a consistent and coherent manner across all communication platforms.
Produce, and edit compelling communication materials that support fundraising, advocacy and awareness raising on food security and nutrition issues in the country.
Contribute to communications through research and analysis for preparation and distribution of information products.
Analyze the communicational landscape related to WFP operations in Burkina Faso and propose adapted communication strategies according to the changing needs and context.
Support implementation of the Country Office communication strategy and communication activities while ensuring all communication channels including radio and television are used in a timely and appropriate manner.
Work with key internal role-players to brainstorm content ideas, in line with the CO strategy and in support of various programme initiatives.
Implement internal communication activities to ensure that employees support the CO mission, values, and objectives by putting together CO-wide newsletters, memos, reports, workshops, and presentations.
Support in developing relationships with members of the media and in responding to requests for information.
Edit and proof-read written documents prepared by the Country Office, including checking spelling, jargon, acronyms and other abbreviations, etc. The drafting and editing work may require some additional research and coordination with relevant units/offices.
Translate into French/English all relevant documents including ACRs, Country Strategic Plans, Standard Operational Procedures, Press Releases, etc.
Ensure all written work is authentic, original, and appropriately cited and/or referenced.
Support any other writing tasks related to communications, as required.
Lead and evaluate communication campaigns in the country.
Any other duties as determined by the supervisor.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Advanced University degree in communication, journalism, public relations, international relations or related disciplines,
Language: Fluency (level C) in both French & English languages
DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE
Proven professional experience of at least 5 years in strategic communications in emergency context, with strong writing skills and content development for international organizations or media entities.
Previous strong experience using advanced and latest multimedia softwares such as Adobe packages, Canvas, etc.
Has gained experience in specialized communications practices and applies this to all activities.
Has managed small teams of staff with related areas of expertise in the delivery of innovative communications projects.
Has provided support in leading projects and input into function policies
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
This Position is offered as an International Consultancy role at Level 2/P3 for a period of 6 months renewable starting asap.
The Position is to be based in WFP Burkina Faso Country Office of Ouagadougou, with some travels expected in WFP field offices
NB: Please note that Ouagadougou is now a non-family duty station, meaning that personnel will not be allowed to bring their family with them for this assignment.
